Impact
- Addresses food security.
- Ensures sustainability of the feeding scheme.
- Encourages community to plant vegetable on their properties, for self-sustainance.
The initiative was started as part of the children feeding scheme/soup kitchen and later designed to form part of Agricultural education in conjunction with ASNAPP in Grootdrink, Gariep and Boegoeberg areas.
It offers training to school children and community members, covering planting, maintenance and harvesting.
The vegetable garden initiative produces tomatoes, green beans, cucumbers and red/green peppers.
The products are then issued to the feeding scheme NGO to make soup for school children and some is sold to the surrounding communities thus generating income for the sustainability of the project.
The project has thus far produced 190kg of vegetables, projections for the next year is anticipated to be 250kg.
