ABOUT US

Bokpoort CSP

Bokpoort CSP is a greenfield Independent Power Project (IPP) which is an integral part of South Africa’s renewable IPP program.

The project is developed on a BOOT (build, own, operate, transfer) basis with a total power generating capacity of 50 MWe net power output.

The project is equipped with the largest thermal storage size ever adopted for a similar operational size providing nine hours of storage and is among the most efficient solar plants in the world.

Project Company

ACWA Power Solafrica Bokpoort CSP Power Plant (Pty) Ltd. (“Bokpoort”).

EPC

Spain’s TSK Electronica y Electricidad, Acciona Infrastructures, Acciona Ingenieria, Sener Ingenieria y Sistemas and Crowie Concessions.

Technology

Bokpoort CSP has a gross capacity of 55 MW and spans under 300 hectares. Its 8,600 solar collector elements capture solar energy, which is transferred via heat transfer fluid to produce steam at 103.6 bar and 380 °C. A 50 MW steam turbine generates electricity, while two molten salt tanks store excess heat for power generation.

Solar field

The solar field consists out of 180 loops grouped into 8 sub-fields with a total of 8600 SCEs using SENER Trough Technology with Flabeg Glass Mirrors. There are in total 241,920 mirrors installed which have a total of 658,000 m2 of reflective surface.

Unprecedented Energy Storage

One of the most remarkable features of the Bokpoort CSP plant is its exceptional energy storage capacity. It is the world’s first commercial utility-scale CSP plant with more than nine hours of thermal storage, allowing it to deliver electricity well after sunset or during peak demand periods.

Thermal Storage System Design

The Bokpoort thermal energy storage system features two 40-meter-wide, 14-meter-high tanks – one hot and one cold – holding 39,100 tons of eco-friendly molten salt (a potassium and sodium nitrate mix). This design enables efficient heat storage and release, supporting the plant’s exceptional performance and sustainability.

What People Say

    PULANE Mogoere

CSI funds are channeled to improve community well-being, Talent, Education, and Community Infrastructure. A keychallenge is the lack of electricity; the use of candles was prevalent with huge incidents of fire. DoC Grid Initiative: 410 systems were installed in the iKheis Municipality, electricity supplied enabled learners to study and Solar TV to ensure the community is part of the communications all over the world - 580 households benefited from this initiative.

      NATALIE Van Schalkwyk

Kids walk long distances to school barefoot, and the supply of shoes and bicycles has improved learner concentration and changed learners’ experience for the better. Thank you to the Police department for coming on board to ensure the safety of learners.

        LINDA Adams

Women in our community have been disadvantaged in many ways. I am grateful for the cleaning contract at ACWA Power – I can now uplift and employ women.

          JEROME Van Staden

ACWA Power created an opportunity for the youth by introducing internships and bursaries in uplifting our community. I personally took the opportunity with both hands to be part of this change and give back to the community.

            PADDY Padmarathan

SA is the most developed economy; ACWA Powers as a long-term investor has created opportunities to make SA the next big investment destination which will spill over Africa.

            What Our Leaders Say

              Nandu Bhula

              The Chairman

ACWA Power Bokpoort is the third CSP in South Africa with an added large thermal storage system that is a rechargeable battery that can heat up malt and salt up to 400c. This dispels the notion that renewable is not dispatchable and reliable. We were able to operate 161hrs without stopping the plant covering long hours of the day. This has set new standards for Africa, and we hope this can last longer setting new possibilities for the renewables. CSPs are useful, with flexible technology and large enough storage which will bring down the costs associated with it and eventually come close to parity with conventional power stations.

              Social Responsibility

Corporate social responsibility is interwoven into our business model and enshrined in our dedicated CSR policy called “Our Commitments”.

The group CSR committee under the direct sponsorship of the Chairman of the board and chaired by the Managing Director consists of 10 executives, including ACWA Power’s Executive Director of CSR, representatives of the corporate business development and legal teams, and representatives from each of our main business regions: Morocco, South Africa, Jordan, Turkey and Oman.

The committee includes an independent external advisor who provides a fresh, independent and critical external perspective.

              Skills Development

Scarce and critical skills have been mapped against a learning matrix for bursary and workplace training opportunities, supported by learnship, internships, apprenticeships, and mentorships as appropriate.

              Enterprise Development

Preferential procurement policy will seek to maximise opportunities to procure from BEE, EME/QSE, women-owned businesses.

              Social Infrastructure

Following a needs assessment and considering Redstone’s business activities, communities will benefit from infrastructure linked to energy (e.g. decentralised renewables), education (targeting science and maths) and health (e.g. mobile clinics and medicine availability) etc
