Driving the transition to a cleaner, greener future

Who We Are

Bokpoort CSP is a greenfield Independent Power Project (IPP) which is an integral part of South Africa’s renewable IPP program.

The project is developed on a BOOT (build, own, operate, transfer) basis with a total power generating capacity of 50 MWe net power output.

The project is equipped with the largest thermal storage size ever adopted for a similar operational size providing nine hours of storage and is among the most efficient solar plants in the world.

What People Say

SA is the most developed economy; ACWA Powers as a long-term investor has created opportunities to make SA the next big investment destination which will spill over Africa.

PADDY Padmarathan

ACWA Power created an opportunity for the youth by introducing internships and bursaries in uplifting our community. I personally took the opportunity with both hands to be part of this change and give back to the community.

JEROME Van Staden

Women in our community have been disadvantaged in many ways. I am grateful for the cleaning contract at ACWA Power – I can now uplift and employ women.

CSI funds are channeled to improve community well-being, Talent, Education, and Community Infrastructure. A keychallenge is the lack of electricity; the use of candles was prevalent with huge incidents of fire. DoC Grid Initiative: 410 systems were installed in the iKheis Municipality, electricity supplied enabled learners to study and Solar TV to ensure the community is part of the communications all over the world - 580 households benefited from this initiative.

PULANE Mogoere

Kids walk long distances to school barefoot, and the supply of shoes and bicycles has improved learner concentration and changed learners’ experience for the better. Thank you to the Police department for coming on board to ensure the safety of learners.

    What Our Leaders Say

ACWA Power Bokpoort is the third CSP in South Africa with an added large thermal storage system that is a rechargeable battery that can heat up malt and salt up to 400c. This dispels the notion that renewable is not dispatchable and reliable. We were able to operate 161hrs without stopping the plant covering long hours of the day. This has set new standards for Africa, and we hope this can last longer setting new possibilities for the renewables. CSPs are useful, with flexible technology and large enough storage which will bring down the costs associated with it and eventually come close to parity with conventional power stations.
