Beneficiaries
ACWA Power Solafrica is the lead agency in the establishment of the Bokpoort CSP in the Northern Cape near the town of Groblershoop.
As part of the agreement to allocate the bid to the ACWA Power Solafrica consortium, the consortium committed to invest in socio economic development and particularly in enterprise development with a land reform and agricultural development focus. The CSR approach allocated funds into the expansion and improvement of an existing joint venture between a commercial farming family and farm workers, Sanddraai Arbeidsgenot Pty. Ltd.
Shares were issued to 11 workers so as to also benefit from the proceeds of the jointly owned company. The intervention had 5 components:
- The provision of funds by ACWA Power Solafrica, as profit was made, to enable the 11 identified workers to progressively acquire the equivalent number of shares as the other existing worker shareholders.
- The purchase of additional area of 32 hectares under Pecan nuts (such would replace the 26 ha under pivot irrigation and bring a farm total of 52 hectares of Pecans).
- The purchase of a pecan tree pruner machine.
- A contribution to the building of a multipurpose centre and improved housing for workers.
- Changes in governance practices and management allowed greater involvement of worker directors
